Human trafficking is a global human rights violation that affects women, girls, and people of all backgrounds. It can involve forced labor, sexual exploitation, servitude, and other forms of exploitation.

Soroptimist International recognizes human trafficking as a serious violation of fundamental human rights and calls for global action to prevent trafficking, protect those who have been exploited, and address the conditions that make people vulnerable to trafficking.

Why This Matters

Human trafficking is often difficult to see. It does not always involve strangers, kidnapping, or physical force. Traffickers may use manipulation, deception, coercion, financial control, or abuse of a person’s vulnerability.

Women and girls are disproportionately affected. SIA reports that women and girls represented 61% of detected trafficking victims worldwide in 2022.

Poverty, limited educational opportunities, homelessness, and other forms of vulnerability can increase the risk of exploitation.

That is why Soroptimists believe education and economic empowerment are powerful tools in the fight against human trafficking.
